Carme Pinos

Born in Barcelona, Carme Pinos graduated from its School of Architecture in 1979. Her first studio was a partnership with Enric Miralles (1983-1991) which produced the Hostalets de Balenya Civic Center (1985), the Olympic Archery Range in Barcelona (1992), and the acclaimed Igualada Cemetery-Park (1994). Starting her individual practice in 1991 she has realized such projects as the Morella Boarding School (1995), the Torrevieja Waterfront (1996), the Pedestrian Bridge in Petrer (1998), and the Ses Estacions Park in Palma de Mallorca (1999). She is currently developing the Formentor Hotel in Palma de Mallorca and the JVC Center Fairgrounds in Guadalajara, Mexico. Pinos' architecture, exhibited in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the USA, is often praised for its complicity with the geographical setting in which it is located. Marked by a poetic use of materials yielding forms that have a sculptural quality, Pinos' designs enliven and refresh. Recognition of her creative talent has come in the form of the Premio FAD (1985), the Premio Ciudad de Barcelona (1992), and the Spanish National Architecture Prize (1995). Carme Pinos has been visiting professor of architecture at Columbia, University of Illinois, Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, ESTAB in Barcelona, and other prominent institutions.
