Axel Schultes

Born in Dresden in 1943 and trained as an architect at the Technical University of Berlin (1963-69) Axel Schultes joined Bangert, Hansen and Scholz as a junior partner in 1972, making this firm his professional home for the next twenty years. During this period a number of his designs were realized as significant buildings, including the exceptional Bonn Art Museum, designed with Charlotte Frank and won in an open competition in 1985. Compared to the numerous museums built in recent years, the Bonn Museum, completed in 1992, is in a class apart, not only for the absolute priority it gives to the illumination of gallery space but also for its meticulous detailing. Aside from optimising the exhibition of art, this Kunstmuseum was also conceived as a civic monument. Its deft insertion into the existing urban fabric presaged Schultes' next significant public work, his 1993 design for the Spreebogen governmental complex in Berlin. Conceived as a single building uniting in one continuous form both the Bundsrat and the Bundestag, this striking project led to Shultes being commissioned with the new Federal Chancellery in Berlin, currently under construction.
